It’s always awesome to hear “alternative” success stories from people who graduated from The Steel Closet’s alma mater. With the exception of emore, we weren’t business majors, or engineers, or pre-med students, and we have no idea what exactly life has in store for us. At first, it was depressing because of the pressure to get a job, any job- as long as it pays salary. Who cares if the job is completely the opposite of how you’d like to ideally contribute to society, the ominous “they” said to us. Repeatedly. Who cares if it’s not what you love! Don’t be picky.

But we weren’t feeling that. So now that we’ve gotten over the few noisy months of pressure and condescension, our down time has turned into something exciting, unpredictable and amazing, and we’re ever-hoping we can turn it into something greater, something that can help everyone in some way; whether we inspire you, give back, or become a substantial voice and showcase for the underrated creativity out there. We know every labor of love takes time to bloom. We’re not in any hurry. And neither should you be.

We can’t thank our readers enough. We luh you.

Read the story of viv&ingrid, who I found on a facebook ad and who are based in the city where I went to high school- Albany, CA:

Vivian Wang and Ingrid Chen met as young girls and remained close friends through adulthood. Growing up in the Bay Area, both completed their undergraduate studies at the University of California at Berkeley. Vivian graduated with a Business degree, emphasizing in Marketing; Ingrid received her BA in Physiology.

Preferring to enhance the human body rather than dissect it, Ingrid switched her pursuit to an MFA in Fashion Design at the Academy of Art College. Meanwhile, Vivian traded the corporate scene for a life on the road, backpacking through Europe, Asia and Australia.

In January of 1999, while discussing the latest fashion trends over coffee, they realized that they were a design team waiting to happen. Vivian with her free-spirited flair, Ingrid with her refined detailing, both obsessive compulsive; they set out together to create a new philosophy in accessible luxuries for the modern woman.

I like the necklace above just cause I’m a sucker for chunky jewelry. Gold & Tigers Eye Alternating Circles, $202 at viv&ingrid.
