Disney and The Hundreds Pt. 2
THEHUNDREDS // DISNEY // THE LOST BOYS from Bobby Hundreds on Vimeo.
A couple months back, I pondered about how Disney could lend their name to the streets. It turns out that Disney has been slowly trying to adjust their image so that they are taken more seriously than “the happiest place on earth” (because that’s not good enough.) This collaboration with The Hundreds seems to be a step in that direction as it reimagines its characters to fit the stylings of today. This is a smart move for both parties. A streetwear brand becomes more legitimate with a Disney cosign and the Disney gets to prove that they’re hip and cool again. What you guys think of it?

I think I’m actually going to go stand in line for this. Ugh.Alexander Worthington iiiCas, you down?
Honestly, I think this is an unbelievable collab with really amazing artwork. The only character that I have a real gripe with is Nibs – the shutter-shades, neckerchief and fixie just puts a huge time stamp on what is an otherwise timeless collection of subcultures (skate, punk, graf) and may get dated with the quickness.Alexander Worthington iiiBut man…this whole ordeal is really on point, and I’m genuinely excited about it. I even like the Peter Pan New Era (post up pics of the whole collection Cas) with the “feather” stitching that literally pops off the cap. I wouldn’t buy it, but it’s a very interesting piece.
Looks like TH is getting more of my money on Thursday.
Collaborations work if they don’t pull in opposite directions. This is an awful idea. I do branding for a living and I can’t think of a worse collaboration. Talk about spreading yourself thin, they are also releasing executive accessories and home furniture like sofas.Alex
It’s clear that Disney needed this more than The Hundreds did. In a world where 3-D animation is now the norm, traditional Disney characters as we know them are an endangered species, and it would make sense for Disney to try to make them relevant again. There’s a serious movement to re-boot Mickey Mouse right now, to elevate him not just as a cartoon icon, not just as a pop-culture icon, but as a subculture icon as well. Of course people have mixed opinion on this, but it’s accomplishing what Disney wants – to have people talking about Mickey again.Alexander Worthington iiiBut there just happened to be a reciprocal admiration for The Lost Boys on the part of the Hundreds, so why wouldn’t they want to have an official collaboration?
I don’t know about streetwear Disney home furniture though, that WOULD be going a little far…
I sorta agree with Alex. It’s a fad just like Fat Albert being on the pockets of FUBU jeans. And even though fashion is not as black and white (hip hop or prep) as it was in the late 90s…the cred of Disney is on the line. If only there was a solid concept backing it up. I hope it works because the “death of traditional disney characters” makes me sad.swillzThis is fly though..
