• First Thursdays | Mick Boogie @ Le Cirque 04.02.09

First Thursdays chronicles the adventures of The Steel Crew as they foray into San Francisco culture on every first Thursday of the month.

Our next stop for the night was at Yoshi’s on Fillmore, where our friends at The Brooklyn Circus host Le Cirque on Thursday nights. The dudes at BkC always come correct with their events (remember Black Star at Otis?) and on that night they treated the crowd to a special guest DJ set with bodacious Mick Boogie. In addition to giving me alliterative license to use the word “bodacious”, Mick Boogie seriously KILLED it and got a lot of good-looking bodies moving in a very small amount of space.

However, in what might be the most horrendous, most fail-laden, most impotent collection of photos in my (very short) photography career, I definitely failed to capture the essence of the evening in photos. I think I need a speedlight, but I don’t know. You’re probably thinking, “Oh Alexander, you’re just exaggerating, they’re probably not that bad.”

Uhm, no. Click after the jump, and you’ll start to cry. The pictures are so bad that your tears will have tears.

Work in progress, folks. I’m trying.

Your retinas melted yet? And think, those are the only shots I pulled off the memory card that were even close to useable. In any case, if any of you lovely Closeteers have tips on how to take natural-looking photos in a club-like setting, I’d love the help. Or you can just email me to make fun of my lack of skills, whatever.

Thanks again to Mick Boogie and the folks at BkC for another excellent show.

You need more light on the sensor. You get that either with a faster lens (same amount of light in the frame but more of it reaching the camera sensor) or an external flash/speedlight (more light in the frame, more light hitting the sensor). What’s happening right now is your camera is compensating for the low light by simultaneously increasing the ISO (sensor sensitivity) and increasing the amount of time the shutter is open. High ISO results in the ugly grain (the weird-colored speckles) – photos #3, #4. The longer shutter speed means motion is blurred while the shutter is open – photo #1, #4. A flash is the better option for this type of constant low light scene photography.

Thanks for that. Too bad the options cost money, but really, this helps.
