• Surprise! You’re a Nerd! – 5 Species of Unknowing Geeks

    nerd copy1

“Nerd” has become a broad term, nowadays more than ever. Where it once was a specific stereotype involving spectacles, math, and the work of Jaleel White, it has now come to refer to fans or enthusiasts of any fringe of pop culture or subculture. And while this commonly refers to comic books, sci-fi/fantasy, or video games, there’s no reason why the term “nerd” can’t apply to fanatics of other subcultures. Intervention time, bitches.

    Foodie Nerds

    foodie at table

I like foodies. They always know great and obscure things to order and where to order it from. And they love to share this knowledge like it’s some shady black market secret, like they have informants leaking them tips about the locations of street vendors. But, just like any other nerd variety, foodies range from friendly enthusiasts to snobtastic elitists. One thing’s for sure, the Food Network crowd is fast making for itself as the newest cult following on the block. And by cult, I mean the Cult of Red Velvet.

    Sneaker Nerds

If camping outside of theaters for the release of a new movie is “nerdy,” then how is it any less nerdy to do the same for a shoe? I’m not sure if this is prevalent everywhere, but here in the SF bay area there are hella people who geek out over sneakers. They covet hard-to-find color variants and keep their collections meticulously packaged and preserved; practices once attributed to comic book collectors (see what I did there?). If you’ve ever looked up the release date of new Jordans like they were the next Harry Potter book, this one’s for you.

    Twilight Nerds

    twilight_fans 2

It’s no secret that Twilighters face resentment from the Comic-con crowd (and any male who is not Edward Cullen, and furthermore never will be). But really, it’s not much of a stretch to call Twilighters nerds. Hell, they have their own convention. A CONVENTION for Zod’s sake. That’s like the equivalent of putting tape on your glasses. The only reason they’ve resisted the “nerd” label for so long is because their fanbase includes hot-and-bothered college girls, a demographic historically alien to the geek world. On the bright side, those girls have no more right to make fun of my very real love for the very fictional Padme Amidala.

    Apple Nerds

It used to be that computer geeks were easy to spot. Largely because they were often near computers. But thanks to Apple, computers are now small and portable enough to fit in your sinus cavity, allowing a new breed of geeks to share their techie love fest with ANYONE within earshot. Now, people are lining up to preorder the latest “iPod SlightlySmallerThanLastTime,” and any time you go out to lunch with friends, everyone with an iPhone whips them out and starts comparing apps, and anyone NOT in their secret club gets to play Snake on their Nokia and sigh. Thanks, Steve Jobs.

    Sports Nerds

    sports nerd 1

Didn’t expect this one, did ya? Sports “fans” or sports “nuts” are really just a more socially-accepted kind of NERD. They convene in stadiums dressed in elaborate cosplay (see above), they interact in Massively-Multiplayer-Online fantasy leagues, and they compare the stats, strengths, and weaknesses of brightly colored teams of real-life, human Pokemon. So to the traditional nemeses of the nerd, to the jocks and the cool kids, I offer two words: “Check” and “mate.”

Now, don’t take this the wrong way. “Nerd” isn’t a dirty word any more. It means “passionate enthusiast” and not “social pariah.” Besides, if everyone’s an outcast, then no one is. We’re all of us one big nerd family, so go ahead and let your geek flag fly.
