Why Taylor Swift Rocks
WORDS BY JessCe

When people ask me what kind of music I listen to I usually respond with “everything but country” but I do honestly like Taylor Swift. Maybe I just want to like her because everyone else seems to have such an issue with her.
One reason I like her is because she started trying to get her career off the ground when she was eleven. Some of the artists on the radio got there based more on their looks or family (Cough, Miley Cyrus, cough) than anything else. Also, a lot of eleven year olds would have given up after the first five record labels rejected them and went on with their awkward phases in private.
Another reason why I like her is because she writes her own songs. In forth grade she won a national poetry contest and now uses that talent to write revenge songs about her ex boyfriends.
Following in the footsteps of Natalie Portman, Taylor Swift made a rap video. I like rap more than any suburban midwestern girl has any right to. I am also a big advocate for contradictions and a rap song about baking cookies and knitting sweaters is high on my list of things that make me laugh.
I know how old I sound when I say this but when I was as old as Taylor Swifts main fan base I was listening to the Spice Girls. They preached the gospel of girl power, slam your body down, and wind it all around. I wanted high- heeled shoes before I was out of elementary school. Taylor Swift’s music is aimed perfectly for her audience teaching girls they can be just as beautiful in tee shirts and sneakers.
Can anyone talk about Taylor Swift without mentioning Kanye? Probably, but why test it. I was personally impressed with how she handled that incident. Yes, she just stood there and looked shocked, but that’s opposed to what I think a lot of people would have done, which is punch him in the face fully glammed up. I totally don’t hate Kanye for it though; he made it interesting and gave us all one of the best catch phrases of 2009.
Did she deserve to win? Sure, she is a twenty-year-old artist who can write, sing and play an instrument. Is she better than some of the other nominees…maybe not, but I would argue that they are in different categories altogether. How can soft-spoken Taylor out entertain Lady GaGa? I, for one, am rooting for her though.

Ya,I’m all for natural talent but you don’t hear my baby girl AKeys mentioning that she’s the most talented female on earth…Kdouble

Totally on Team Taylor. Saw a segment of her on Oprah which made me dig her skills even more. Although… I was NOT a fan of her rendition of Rhiannon on the Grammys. Why they gotta hurt Stevie Nicks like that?!Superstylin*
Gotta agree with you there. I was raised on Stevie Nicks and I died a little inside on Grammy’s night.JessCe
