• Green vs. Red: The Struggle to Market R-rated Films

    kickass

There is a new movie coming out in April that goes by the name of Kick Ass. Some scenes from the movie were previewed at Comic Con, and since then, the internets have been a buzzing. I wasn’t able to make it to Comic Con last year, so I was desperately waiting for the trailer to come out. Here is the Green Band trailer released for theaters.

Ehhhh. It is alright. But take a look at the red band trailers released for the movie.

Oh yea much better. Those trailers are able to give you a much better look at the style of violence and humor the film is going for. The only problem is that most people looking at the red band trailers are a small group of internet users. Most theaters do not allow red band trailers to play in front of their movies, even if the movie itself is also R Rated. Theaters prefer to have the green band trailers in order to move them from one print to another depending on the week (The studio usually ships only one or two trailers that must be played before the film. The other trailers you see are chosen by the theater management).

Right now, studios are relying on red band trailers to spread word by mouth and it is a neat little way to build up buzz on the movie. But if studios really need that red band trailer in order to get that audience, they need to start putting pressure on the theaters to show those red band trailers in theaters. Really, it is good for all. The movie get better publicized by being shown in front of an audience, the movie pulls in more people to the theaters, more films like Kick Ass get made and I can continue to geek out on cool movies.

We have a couple of Hit Girl banners on our header, and McLovin’, our mascot, is in the movie.

Just some fun food for thought.

I have no idea where the lines are anymore. I’m amazed they’re allowed to release a movie with the name “Kick Ass.” Imagine walking around in a mall and seeing four character posters with “Kick Ass” blazoned across them for every soccer mom to see.

Well they have to go somewhere to find something quick, hot, and nasty when the pinot grigio takes hold.

There’s only so much sangria to be sipped under an awning on the patio.
