• You Need to Make Like My Hair, and Relax

“If your hair is relaxed, white people are relaxed. If your hair nappy, they’re not happy.” – Paul Mooney

The “Good Hair” Trailer, Chris Rock’s new movie about the Black Women’s Hair Products industry, has been making the rounds. The line by Paul Mooney sells it for me.

I’m actually interested in watching this. You see, I’ve had quite the adventure with my hair. From the day I was born, it has gone from combed-to-the-side, to spiked, to afro, to long, to cornrowed (yeah I’m Asian, what?!), to curled up in rollers, and then finally to normal boring young adult style. Yeah we’ve definitely been through some times, but there are and were a couple of things that I refused to put my hair through. You could call them “coif rules.” I never blowdry my hair or use a straight iron, and I was most certainly scared to death of “relaxer.” After watching the Temptations movie like 30 times, and seeing what those dudes went through to get their hair like that, I was certain that it couldn’t be healthy for your hair.

But in any case, a movie about a billion-dollar industry and how it dictates standards of beauty sounds interesting enough to watch…or at least DL.

Plus, I’ll get to learn about weave sex, a concept that eludes me.
