‘Milk’ Premieres in Castro Today

Sean Penn plays Harvey Milk, “an activist and politician, and the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in America; in 1977, he was voted to the city supervisors’ board of San Francisco. The following year, both he and the city’s mayor George Moscone were shot to death by another city supervisor, Dan White.”

The movie, “Milk,” directed by Gus Van Sant, premieres in the Castro today and, as they say in the world of cliche movie criticism, “it’s already generating a lot of awards season buzz.” Seriously, though, it does look good and doesn’t hit me with an overt preachy factor, despite the presence of Preacher Penn. The film stars hottie heartthrobs like Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin, James Franco, and Diego Luna- but sorry girls, they’re gay. Except for Josh Brolin, who likes to play assholes, apparently- he’s Dan White, the man who fired the shots. Ooh, and there’s also Victor Garber (JACK BRISTOW!) as Mayor Moscone.

The movie’s buzz comes at a great time for the No on 8 campaign- which the Steel Closet fully supports. I know we’re speaking mostly to people in, like, Fresno (no offense), when we say “VOTE NO!”- but if there are any of you out there, take a moment to ignore the stupid commercials on both sides of the field and just look at the basics. Apple, Google and even the cast of Ugly Betty say no. Think about it.

I’ve had the pleasure of being the Web/Media Intern for talented Bay Area spoken word collective, iLL-Literacy, for a few months now. They’re currently making stops for their national “Natural Electricity” tour, and will be performing with The Getback in San Francisco at MILK next Sunday, Oct. 26! Check them out, they are very talented peoples.

On top of that, the only female in the group, Ruby Veridiano-Ching (who also happens to be a model and a MYX VJ), is releasing her book, “Miss Universe,” on the same day as the MILK show. I’ve always admired Ruby’s super-stylish clothing tastes, which she often chronicles on her lovely blog, the glamourbaby trails.
